I have to admit, Twin Cities family photography is always pure magic during the summer. A season filled with its own distinct signature. There’s something about the summer months that feels divergent. The days are longer, the light lingers in corners, the evenings are slow, and nothing compares to running through the sweet-smelling grass completely barefoot. It also feels as though our schedules have enjoyed the gift of freedom. We are no longer bound to school drop-off or pickup, or the pressures driven by the date on the calendar. Which, in my opinion, is what makes summer one of the best seasons for scheduling a family photoshoot.
In addition to the sentiment that summer evokes, we also have freedom from our winter wardrobes. We’ve finally shed the necessary bulky layers that previously kept us warm. In their place, we have the option of embracing a sense of style that is light and effortless. Where hooded sweatshirts once existed under coats but over tops, we now seek out the bright, flowy sundresses hanging in the back of our closet.

Summertime Family Photos
So often, the families I work with will ask what they should wear to their summer family photoshoot. After all, your flowy sundress will more than likely be paired with a barefoot baby snuggled up against your hip. My advice is always to keep it simple. Opt for breathable materials that are made for comfort. Dads can relax in short-sleeved tops while those playful toddlers enjoy the freedom provided by rompers or a fun dress. Uncomplicated style takes the form of knits, shorts, and linen. No overthinking, no overly matching outfits required. Making summer the perfect time for scheduling a Twin Cities family photography session.
The chic and carefree wardrobe is merely one of the reasons I love working with families over the summer. However, there are so many benefits beyond the fantastic choice of attire. The change of the season brings about an emergence. Not just from being indoors, but with our sense of self as well. We find ourselves slowing down, smelling the roses, frolicking in the park, and making plans for the things we’ve looked forward to since the previous year.

Twin Cities Family Photography
Embracing Twin Cities family photography with the sentiments of summer in mind, I worked with the family featured here to slow down and enjoy the light. All told, this was the fifth session with this beautiful family. Including capturing their daughter’s newborn photos at home. Their sweet children are growing, and they wanted to embrace what life looks like for them at this very moment. Taking a cue from the season and slowing down to breathe it all in, we decided to meet at a local park for their photoshoot. The terrain was lush and fully in bloom. But the glowing light peering through the trees was the element that most embodied what it means to be present in the moment as it unfolds.
