What should my newborn wear?
A big question I get from moms when I have a consultation call with them is “what should I dress my newborn in for photos”? I always reply to keep it simple.
When you book your session, you will a receive a newborn welcome guide. It goes over how to prep for your newborn session, what everyone should wear and much more. However, if you read on I’m giving a sneak peek into my 5 tips on how to dress your newborn for the session.
What should my newborn wear?
- Consider a neutral color palette. This will draw the viewer’s eye to the connection of the family rather than the clothing. Stay away from bright colors and busy patterns and opt for soft neutral solids.
- Purchase two different sizes of clothing. Your newborn changes so quickly in the first few weeks. It is really important that the clothing fits snug rather than loose for portraits.
- Consider textures for your little one’s clothing. A soft knitted outfit or sweater always photographs well and keeps them warm!
- Babies often like to be swaddled. A white muslin swaddle blanket is always great for photos and gives the opportunity to photograph the little toes.
- Accessories. If you have a little girl and wish for her to wear a bow, think about incorporating a small neutral tone one. If you wish to include any bonnets or hats again make sure they fit well and are a soft color ton.
I will always bring a long few white swaddle blankets that have different textures to my newborn sessions. This give families the option to use one rather than go out and purchase. Swaddling is mainly used for newborn sessions as the warmth and tightness of the swaddle keeps the baby happy and calm throughout the session. It is also an easy and great way for older siblings to be able to hold their newborn sibling.
