Understandably, so many of the loving families I work with prefer an at home photography experience. Taking your tiny newborn to a photography studio can feel more like a chore When, in all reality, your newborn photography experience should be a joy for the entire family. It’s hard to enjoy a beautiful experience when you are concerned about taking your newborn to a busy photography studio. All the while filling a diaper bag to the brim and navigating a new sleeping and feeding schedule. Setting up at home photography allows the session to be centered around you and your baby’s needs. As opposed to the needs and schedule of a studio.

This is my second time working with the sweet family featured below. We scheduled a session in their beautiful home, which overlooks Lake Minnetonka. They are currently in a season of life where newborn snuggles and adventurous toddler expeditions have a firm grasp. These moments, when Mom is holding her baby, and big brother is tugging at her leg are so tender. It’s a time in early childhood when our daily schedules are dictated by nighttime routines and locating a lovie. So much of our time is spent nurturing and tending to our littles with a full heart. But, it’s a sweet spot where we can hug our babies a little longer and enjoy silly moments with the biggest giggles.

My focus for this at home newborn photography session in Minneapolis was to let those natural moments of early childhood unfold. No posing, no coaxing, no stilted or staged moments. In fact, prompting and posing are something I often advise my families against when we first get started. Let your children have fun, be free, and interact with you the way they would any other day. Let them snuggle up to your side, or ask to be held, or smile and giggle when they’re ready. Natural moments, when your baby falls asleep with their cheek planted up against you, or your toddler is carefully watching their new sibling sleep, are the most beautiful glimpse back I can ever offer you as your photographer.

The only concession that was made during this session, to give it some vibrancy, was to open all the blinds. This beautiful family has such a lovely home featuring walled windows. We pulled all of the blinds open to let a flood of natural light wash over them. Doing so allowed me to capture every sweet little baby wrinkle, every unabashed smile, and every glimpse of baby fingers and toddler toes.
