Picking the right season for your family photos
What season really is best for family photos? This may have crossed your mind and while Fall seems to be a big booking season, I hope you consider some of the other seasons as there are many advantages to anytime of year.
Spring family photos
Spring sessions are so wonderful! I love the blooming trees, green grass, the energy and brightness as we come out of our very cold Minnesota winter. Everyone is eager to get outside and is thankful for warmer temps and longer days of sunlight.
Spring sessions are some of my favorite as the temps are manageable, school/activities are easier to work around and you still have time to do another session or two throughout the year. Also, if the weather doesn’t cooperate it is easier to reschedule during this time of the year.
Summer family photos
Everything is green, lush and beautiful this time of year! You can’t beat the summer sunsets, warm temps, sun kissed skin tones and more flexible schedules. While all these are huge pros to summer portrait sessions keep in mind it can be hot and very humid. So if your significant other or children don’t do well in the heat, you may want to consider a different time of year to ensure that everyone feels comfortable.
Fall family photos
Fall is definitely the most popular season to book a family portrait session. The cooler temps provide the beautiful Midwest leaf colors background that many families like to use for a holiday card. While I love a Fall session just as much as everyone else, there are a few downfalls.
Fall sessions book quickly so it can be harder to get your desired date and time plus school/activities are in full swing so it can make scheduling more difficult. While we all hold out hope for the spectacular leaf colors, they can be very unpredictable-just depends on what kind summer we have had. If peak season isn’t when you booked your session, you’ll need to stay flexible as rescheduling is very limited.
Winter family photos
Winter sessions can be so wonderful and very beautiful! I love a fresh snowfall on the trees and is always a beautiful backdrop. But as we know it can be VERY cold in Minnesota during the winter. Be considerate of the ages of your children and if they can tolerate the allotted time for a family session. If you are hoping for a session later in the year, but know a winter session isn’t best for you family, contact me and we can talk about a natural light studio setting for your family.
Take advantage of all four seasons
If you tend to always book your family portraits in the Fall try Spring or Summer! The color palettes are beautiful and will be a nice change on your wall. If you like to send a holiday card, your family photos can be from any time of the year. Maybe switch it up this year! Personally, I love to schedule our family portraits at the end of August or middle of September while everything is still green, the temps are manageable and our personal schedules are more flexible.
If you have questions or are ready to book your family photo session, I’m always available to help guide you in the best decision for your family.
