Kate & Matt: Northeast Minneapolis Wedding

On Saturday, I had the incredible honor of photographing Kate and Matt’s wedding at the Uppercut Boxing Gym in Northeast Minneapolis. We couldn’t complain with the forty degree weather we got to work with at the end of January! They were surrounded by one of the largest wedding parties I have every photographed, and it was evident how much they love to be around others. This bridal party was constantly dancing, hugging, sharing stories, and cheering on the newlyweds. I am excited to share a little of their wedding day!

Congrats Kate & Matt! Your wedding day was incredible and I am so happy that I was able to capture your day!

Eucalyptus Wedding Inspiration: Styled Shoot

This past weekend I had the pleasure of working on a personal project with some other local vendors in the area! We all have a love for eucalyptus and couldn’t imagine not having it as one of the main focus for our styled table setting. The natural elements and the beautiful hand lettering calligraphy were some favorite details. Everything about this shoot was breathtaking and it was so much fun seeing our vision come together.

Enjoy a small sneak peek at the collaboration with Paper White Events and Weddings & Shasta Bell Calligraphy.

Second Shooting: What it is and how to prepare

kristen_dyer_photography

I’ve been fortunate to be in an industry with many creatives and mentors that have been willing to share so much helpful information with me. In return, I want to help others that are just getting started in their creative fields. I am going to be sharing some posts over the next few weeks that will include some tips that were shared with me or information I have learned. This week I am sharing about being a second shooter.

This past year, I have had incredible opportunities to second shoot with a few outstanding photographers that I look up to. Working as a second shooter creates pressure in a way that is different from being the primary photographer. Instead of being able to run the show, you have to step back and be able to take direction. You are essentially the support person for your primary photographer in addition to taking care of yourself. At the same time, second shooting provides the added benefits of learning new things while shadowing and finding alternative angles to work with. I truly enjoy being able to work in both roles! I wanted to write a bit about what I have learned as a second shooter as well as what to expect and how to act if you are thinking about becoming one. For those prospective wedding parties reading, this will be informative for you as well as some photographers have packages that include second shooters. It should clarify what expectations you can have if you choose a package with a second shooter.

While the primary photographer is focusing on the bride and groom front and center, I can take that time to shoot from the side, take a few extra steps back to create more of a foreground or capture those in-between moments when the main photographer decides to change position or location. I also have the added benefit of really slowing down and analyzing the environment around me, so I can capture the bride and groom in a different way from the primary photographer.

Being a second shooter for photographers that I have admired has been one of the best decisions that I have made in my business. I am so thankful that these businesswomen have not only trusted me enough to allow me to shoot with them, but that they really care about me and my experience while we work together. They are willing to teach me things I have been trying to improve on. For example, lighting a wedding reception differently and using a video light for a few last minute details at the end of the night. They send me encouraging emails and refer clients to me if they are already booked. These women are willing to share all their tips and tricks and answer all the questions I have about running your own small business. I have seen these opportunities as a growing experience and am so glad that I took as many chances as I have to continue my education as a photographer, not only for myself but for my clients too.

Here are the best and most important things I have learned as a second shooter:

  • Pack all your camera gear. You never know if the primary photographer will need to borrow something of yours.
  • Always be in communication with the primary photographer. Ask “are there certain shots you would like me to capture?” or “where would you like me for the ceremony?”
  • Be ready to be a pack mule. Yes, you are there to shoot, but you also are in charge of their equipment along with yours. Be ready to grab a extra lens, CF card, light stand, or step stool.
  • Know what the primary photographer needs before she even can ask. Like bring her a snack or water when you see she is starting to slow down. Give her fuel to push through the next few hours.
  • Be ready to gather family members for family formals and to use your loud voice.
  • Shoot like it is your own wedding without getting in the way of the primary photographer. Give them the best you got!
  • Always show up prepared with the timeline for the day.
  • Have your GPS handy at all times and be ready to drive to the next location.
  • Show up with a smile, be ready to learn, have fun, and laugh a lot.

Jenna & Al: Duluth Wedding

This year, I have had incredible opportunities to second shoot with a few outstanding photographers that I have looked up to. I was lucky enough to be able to second shoot with Bailey Aro a few times this year. I had a blast shooting alongside her on the wedding below. It was such an inspiring day to see how true and authentic she is with each and every one of her clients.

On a windy Duluth day, Jenna and Al tied the knot at the Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth. Their ceremony consisted of music played from local musician friends and a cocktail that was mixed and shaken by their wedding party as a sign of their unity. Jenna and Al’s personalities and love for their friends, family and music was clear and represented throughout their wedding day. Their smiles and laughter could be seen and heard from miles away. Al kissing Jenna’s shoulder and nuzzling up alongside her to keep her warm was a scene that often took place that day.

Their wedding day was perfect and I feel completely honored that I was able to meet these two and help capture their wedding day. Congrats Jenna and Al!

Best of 2015 Portraits & Engagements

Family sessions are so special. Yes, it takes a lot of work at times to prepare for a session especially if there are little ones involved! But these times are fleeting and I feel such delight at documenting those moments. This past year, I was able to capture so many growing families at different times in their lives- as they welcomed a little one, celebrated a big milestone, or just wanted to document family as they are in this present time. Along with these families, I was able to spend some time with my up and coming wedding couples for 2016. It was so fun and gratifying to meet all of them as they are starting their wedding journey. Enjoy a recap of these family, maternity, newborn, and engagement sessions.

Best of 2015 Weddings

I’m jumping on the bandwagon and doing a best of 2015 list! It has been an amazing year with so many wonderful couples. I loved revisiting all of my sessions and recalling all of the giggles, tears, and love. Each image means something to me– if it was a special moment between the couple, if I was trying something new, or a candid shot that I just loved. This collection of my favorites reminds me why I love my couples and the work I get to do. Thank you so much to all my 2015 couples and trusting me with your special day. It means so much to me and I consider it a privilege to be a part of your wedding day!

Sefton Family: Minneapolis Lifestyle Session

It is such a joy to document a growing family. I loved photographing this family of three (soon to be a family of four in April!). Ainsley is one of the liveliest and loveable little girls around. Despite a cold, she still shared some of her dance moves with me. She is going to be so good at entertaining her little brother and will be a devoted big sister. It will be so heartwarming to see that relationship develop in the future.

Kate & Matt: Minneapolis Engagement

Last week, I had the privilege of photographing Kate and Matt’s Engagement session near Mill City! With this December, being seasonably warm  we took full advantage not having to be zipped up in big puffy jackets and enjoying these last few warmer days.

Kate and Matt met at the church they attend and it didn’t take long for them to know they were meant to be for one another. Their love for for one another, coffee and others can easily been seen.

Congrats Kate and Matt! I can’t wait for your January wedding!

Danielle & Brian: New Prague Wedding

Last month, I had the incredible honor and privilege of photographing the wedding of my friends Danielle and Brian in my hometown of New Prague. Danielle and her family thought of every aspect while planning for the big day. Everything from the hankies to dry the teary eyes to her family members giving her memorable and personal touches to add to her wedding dress that reflected something new, old, blue, and borrowed.

The wedding was at St.Wencelaus church before their gorgeous reception at the Mankato Verizon Center. On our way to the reception, we stopped at Next Chapter Winery- where you may remember, we photographed their dreamy sun drenched engagement session. Make sure to check out those images because their adorable little pup Harley joined in the session!

Their wedding day was filled with many happy tears, laughs, and cheers for the newlyweds. These two are just the perfect pair and I couldn’t be more thankful that I was able to capture their wedding day.

Congratulations Danielle and Brian!
